The melding of research with patient care is at the heart of everything we do

Translational Research

One of VHIO’s priority objectives is the development of specific treatments to combat the mechanisms that cause specific tumors. To achieve this, the results obtained in the laboratory must be applied to patient care, and the responses of patients and other observations derrived from clinical practice must return to the laboratory as a data source for formulating hypotheses and inspiring new lines of research. At VHIO, this translational research means performing preclinical and clinical trials in patients and designing open research projects that allow data to flow freely between the laboratory and the clinic.

VHIO's mission

To promote the development of scientific research into pioneering clinical practice, thus enabling our patients to benefit from the very latest advances in oncological research

Research at VHIO

VHIO  undertakes  one of the country’s most dynamic programs of cancer research. The extraordinary patient care we provide is enlightened by our innovative programs in basic, translational, and clinical research. Research at VHIO  is dedicated to understanding the biology of cancer through programs in cellular and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and therapeutics.

Researchers  collaborate with Vall d’Hebron University Hospital physician-scientists, a partnership that helps speed important research findings from the laboratory to the bedside, via a process known as translational research. VHIO  leads clinical trials programs to identify more effective cancer therapies, and our physicians are currently leading more than 100 clinical trials for adult cancers.

SLOGAN VHIO

VHIO's primary objective  is to close the gap between research results obtained in laboratories and clinical developments in patient care quickly and effectively, through the building of bridges that connect the needs of doctors and patients with the basic science programs and translational research lines. In other words, VHIO brings together all basic, clinical and translational research carried out at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, in order to improve prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The main focus of research in recent years has been the development of agents to target specific molecules, and the identification of biomarkers that predict sensitivity or resistance to these agents. VHIO has also been involved in the clinical development of several new agents including: gefitinib, erlotinib, lapatinib, pertuzumab, m-TOR inhibitors, PI3K inhibitors, TGFß inhibitors, SRC inhibitors, insulin-like growth factor receptor inhibitors and a variety of antiangiogenic agents. Many of these anti-cancer therapeutic agents are now approved for clinical use.
