STRATEGIC GOALS

  • Describe the key molecular mechanisms that confer CoCSC their capacity to self-renew and resist conventional or target directed therapies.
  • Unmask the molecular drivers of CSC quiescence, clinical relevance in cancer progression, and evaluate their potential inhibition to eradicate CoCSC.
  • Identify the central molecules responsible for the development of metastasis in colon cancer.
  • Study the efficacy and mechanism of action of new Wnt/beta-catenin inhibitory drugs for the treatment of CRC patients.

CURRENT OBJECTIVES

  • To characterize the gene expression profile specific to the new CoCSC populations described in our laboratory. This screening approach will allow us to identify new molecules specifically expressed by CoCSC, which could become effective biomarkers for predicting tumor progression and response to therapy.
  • Development of small drugs that inhibit molecular targets key for dormant CSC survival.
  • Studying how some epigenetic factors impose dormant stemness in minor populations of CSC in solid tumors.
  • Evaluating the efficacy of new rationally combined treatments with Wnt/beta-catenin inhibitors in in colon cancer.
  • Identifying the molecular determinants of sensitivity to therapeutic Wnt/beta-catenin inhibitors
