Research Unit for Molecular Therapy of Cancer (UITM)-"la Caixa"

The Research Unit for Molecular Therapy of Cancer (UITM)   –“la Caixa”  focuses its activities on two areas of research: the development of new drugs based on the molecular profile of each tumor and the optimization of treatment regimes by using combinations of new drugs with already existing ones.  To achieve this the research unit will be multidisciplinary and include; medical oncologists, specialists in molecular pathology, pharmacists exclusively dedicated to this field, experts in imaging and diagnostics, nurses specialized in molecular treatments and study coordinators.

This multidisciplinary approach means that the patient receives the full range of expertise for his or her illness and detailed advice on the characteristics of his or her particular treatment.

The Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology and the Research Unit for Molecular Therapy of Cancer-“la Caixa” are situated in a patient care environment, the Vall d’Hebron Hospital, while at the same time they are inside the research context, the hospital Research Institute.  The new unit formed by joining the health care and research areas is an extremely important element for the success of research projects involving patients.

The Welfare Projects Division of the "la Caixa" Foundation allocate a total of 7 million Euros annually to supporting biomedical research with a view to advancing the treatment for cancer and offering better therapy options to patients.

The UITM-“la Caixa” occupies an area of 1000 m2 on the ground floor of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital.  These premises are divided into different areas: the day hospital, the medical consultant’s offices, pharmacy (comprising: consultancy and preparation and white room) and the research coordination area.  There are also areas restricted to access by medical staff.
