Antonis Antoniou – Breast and ovarian cancer risk stratification: progress and challenges
- Speaker: Antonis Antoniou, Professor of Cancer Risk Prediction, Academic Course Director for the MPhil in Epidemiology, University of Cambridge, London
- Talk title: Breast and ovarian cancer risk stratification: progress and challenges
- Date & time: Friday 27th November, 12:00h
- Hosts: Judith Balmaña and Sara Gutiérrez, PI and Senior Scientist, respectively, Hereditary Cancer Genetics Group
Professor Antoniou’s main research is the development and application of statistical modelling techniques for addressing clinical questions, and the development of cancer risk prediction tools which are used in clinical practice for cancer risk-stratification and prevention. He is the principal developer of the risk prediction algorithm «BOADICEA» for breast and ovarian cancer. He has developed novel statistical techniques for modelling disease susceptibility and has applied these methods for the accurate risk characterisation of rare mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2 and other cancer susceptibility genes.
He established the data coordinating centre of the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA), which aims to identify and characterise modifiers of cancer risk for BRCA1/2 mutation carriers, and has led the analytical efforts of the consortium since its inception.
