The first contribution from her lab described the role of mitochondria metabolism controlling lysosome function and inflammatory response (Baixauli et al, Cell Metabolism 2015). In 2015, she was prized by L’Oréal – UNESCO Women for Science. In 2017, Maria was awarded with a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) with the purpose of elucidating the molecular pathways linking mitochondrial metabolism in chronic inflammation and aging. As a result of this action, Mittelbrunn´s lab has recently described the role of T cells as instigators of age-associated diseases through the control of inflammaging (Desdin-Mico et al, 2020 Science). Overall, her scientific work is summarized in 50 articles published in international journals that account for more than 7000 citations with an h-index of 36.
