Reflective of their exceptional contributions to cancer science, VHIO’s Josep Tabernero, Enriqueta Felip & Javier Cortés feature among Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2021

Barcelona, November 16, 2021. Announced today, Clarivate has revealed its annual list of some 6,600 Highly Cited Researchers 2021, curated by the Institute for Scientific Information. For another consecutive year, we are proud to report that our Director, Josep Tabernero, Enriqueta Felip, Principal Investigator of VHIO’s Thoracic Tumors & Head and Neck Cancer Group, and Javier Cortés, an Associate Translational Investigator at VHIO, feature among the world’s elite scientists at academic research organizations across the globe.

Since 2001, Clarivate identifies internationally acclaimed research scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated exceptional influence in their respective field – reflected through their publication of multiple papers frequently cited by their peers during the last decade.

Josep Tabernero, also Head of the Medical Oncology Department, Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (HUVH), and Past-President of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), has for the sixth consecutive year been selected for significantly advancing cancer research under the category of Clinical Medicine that lists a total of 453 named leaders this year.

Joining Josep on the 2021 list of outstanding contributors to Clinical Medicine, VHIO’s Enriqueta Felip, who is also Head of the Thoracic Cancer Unit at HUVH, President of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), and Secretary of the International Association for the Study Lung Cancer (IASLC), has been recognized for a third year running. Recognized under the Cross-Field category last year, Javier Cortés, an Associate Translational Investigator at VHIO, has also now been selected as a Highly Cited Researcher 2021 under the same category.

Commenting for VHIO’s Global Communications Josep Tabernero said, “I am truly honored to feature on this prestigious listing of leading academics. But, this recognition is not about individual contributions. Rather, it reflects the efforts driven through teamwork at my Institute as well as strong cross-border collaborations with colleagues and peers across the globe.”

Echoing this sentiment, Enriqueta Felip added, “I take this opportunity to gratefully thank all of our translational and multidisciplinary teams and talents, research partners and other specialties who enable us to collectively advance transformative cancer science and medicine. Excellence in oncology can only be achieved through close connectivity and the shared dedication of many other leaders in our field.”

This year’s listing for Clinical Medicine includes 9 other scientists from across Spain. For 2021, Josep Tabernero, Enriqueta Felip, and Javier Cortés are once again in the company of an additional 6 leading researchers in biomedicine who are also pioneers of research in oncology, 2 of whom are based in Barcelona. They are: Joaquim Bellmunt, Hospital de Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM, Barcelona), Jordi Bruix, Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS (Barcelona), María Victoria Mateos, Institute for Biomedical Research of Salamanca (IBSAL), Jesús F. San Miguel, University of Navarra, and Luis Paz-Ares, Complutense University of Madrid.

Statistics surrounding regional concentrations of top talent revealed that Spain ranks 9th in the Top 10 list of countries with the highest number of Highly Cited Researchers. Specifically, a total of 109 trailblazers from Spain feature this year.

On behalf of all at VHIO, we congratulate Josep, Enriqueta, and Javier for this tremendous recognition as well as applaud the outstanding work of the other two listed global experts from Vall d’Hebron, Xavier Montalban, Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) and the Multiple Sclerosis Centre of Catalonia (Cemcat), and María Buti, Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (HUVH), who are recognized under the categories of Neuroscience and Behavior, and Cross-Field, respectively.
